China asserts its sovereignty over Hong Kong. Tough new laws threaten religious freedom.

China has been clamping down on protests in Hong Kong, as tough new laws come into force to bring the region into line with the mainland.

It’s feared new national security laws could be turned against Christians, just as they have been in mainland China.

The law gives the authorities greater powers in Hong Kong to clamp down on so-called subversion and ‘foreign collusion’ – charges often brought to bear against Christians in China.

Freedom cut short

Christian pastors in Hong Kong have issued a statement saying they will continue to preach the gospel and obey God, even if they are punished for it by the authorities.

David Peek of UCB Radio asked Andrew Boyd of Release how the law was likely to affect Christians in Hong Kong:
