Holding on to Jesus in the face of heartless brutality

Coming to faith in Christ is a life-changing moment for all of us, but for new believers in Egypt who leave Islam to follow Jesus, it is life changing in a profound way.

When ‘Ayesha’ (not her real name) chose to follow Christ, she was kidnapped by her brother, along with two of her four young daughters aged 8 and 9 at the time. Trying to force her to recant her new faith, they were held without food. After three days he fed them, but made them eat off the floor, he also boiled a kettle and poured it on her body.

Her daughters were also beaten with a stick by her uncle, breaking the younger one’s arm and her sister’s leg. As ‘Ayesha’ watched this, she felt she was ‘dying’ as this was ‘all because of my decision to become a Christian’.

Although she is no longer suffering such extreme abuse, she remains with the family because the only way she can get away from them is to leave her children behind – a price she is not willing to pay.
